Everyone at Leatherhead FC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Colin Woffinden, who died peacefully on Saturday surrounded by his family.
Colin represented the Tanners between 1974 and 1977, making 174 appearances and scoring 20 goals during a memorable period in the club’s history.
A gifted and versatile footballer, Colin began his career with Eastbourne United and Lewes, where he won an Athenian League title, before moving into the Football League with Brighton & Hove Albion. He made his league debut against Gillingham in November 1970 and scored once during four appearances for the Seagulls. Following spells with Sutton United and Walton & Hersham, Colin arrived at Fetcham Grove after the break-up of a successful Walton side, joining alongside Willie Smith and Dave Sargent.
Colin quickly became an integral member of the Leatherhead team that enjoyed some of the club’s most famous FA Cup adventures. Equally accomplished in central midfield or central defence, he possessed a calmness on the ball that set him apart. Strong in the air and comfortable in possession, Colin always seemed to have time and space when others did not. His intelligence, composure and versatility made him a key figure in a talented Tanners squad.
Following his departure from Leatherhead in 1977, Colin joined Tooting & Mitcham United before returning to Sutton United. He later moved into management with Burgess Hill Town and remarkably continued playing for his local side, Saltdean, into his mid-forties.
Away from the senior game, Colin made a lasting contribution to youth football. He was instrumental in establishing Brighton’s Youth Development Scheme and was also co-author of the Guinness Book of Skilful Soccer, helping to inspire future generations of young players.
Colin’s contribution to Leatherhead FC, both through his performances on the pitch and his role in some of the most memorable days in the club’s history, will never be forgotten.
The thoughts and condolences of everyone at Leatherhead FC are with Colin’s family, friends and former teammates at this difficult time.

Colin or woofy as we all knew him, was a great character both on and off the pitch. When, as a player for Worthing , I was out injured with a cruciate injury , I watched leatherhead on many occasions with the greats of that team
All over the pitch
