Leatherhead FC 3–2 Bognor Regis Town FC

Leatherhead edged a lively encounter at Fetcham Grove, overcoming Bognor Regis Town 3–2 in an entertaining contest that was settled by a strong second-half performance and a brace from Hogan.

The Tanners began brightly and fashioned the first opportunity of the afternoon when Waters curled a tempting ball towards Breckon, only for the pass to be intercepted and gathered by Bognor goalkeeper Lincoln. Hogan then beat his man on the right and delivered a low cross which Lincoln again claimed comfortably.

Coles thought he had played Massango in down the left, but the assistant’s flag curtailed the move, before Bognor registered their first chance with a long-range effort that drifted just wide of the Tanners’ goal.

Leatherhead continued to probe. Coles skipped past his marker with ease before crossing into the box, though Lincoln was again well placed. Waters then reacted sharply to a deflection but could only send his effort wide. Gallagher repeatedly troubled Chaffrey down the flank, and after cutting inside and feeding Waters, the midfielder fired over from distance.

Massango sent a deep cross into the box which Lincoln claimed confidently, before Leatherhead came agonisingly close to opening the scoring. Gallagher delivered a teasing ball towards the six-yard box that found Black, whose looping header rebounded off the post and was smothered by Lincoln. Butler then showed excellent awareness to throw himself in the way of a goalbound effort and clear off the line.

Tempers briefly flared when Chaffrey chopped down Gallagher on the left, escaping with just a warning, before Hogan was sent clear one-on-one with Lincoln, only to drag his shot narrowly wide. Moments later, Lincoln was again called into action, pushing Hogan’s deep inswinging corner away from under his crossbar.

Leatherhead finally made the breakthrough in the 44th minute. Hogan kept the ball alive inside the Bognor penalty area before finding Gallagher, whose deep cross was retrieved superbly by Coles. The midfielder cut the ball back into the danger area where George Hedley was on hand to fire home from close range.

The lead, however, lasted barely a minute. With the final kick of the half, Seok-Jae stepped up to a free kick and clipped a fine effort over the wall and into the net to send the sides in level at the break.

Leatherhead made an immediate impact after the restart, introducing Kennett and Halim in place of Gallagher and Massango. Block tried his luck from distance early on but sent his effort high over the bar.

The Tanners regained the lead in the 54th minute. Hogan picked up possession just inside the box and unleashed a curling effort that floated over Lincoln and nestled into the side netting. It was a goal worthy of the occasion and swung momentum firmly back in Leatherhead’s favour.

Hogan continued to be at the heart of everything, playing Kennett through down the left, though the full-back’s low cross was blocked behind for a corner. Coles then produced a moment of invention with an audacious rainbow flick that dropped invitingly for Hedley, but Bognor recovered to clear their lines.

The game became increasingly physical, with Allcock booked for a late challenge on Waters and Block receiving a caution for a tactical foul inside the Bognor half. Halim went close to extending the lead when he drove into the box and nudged the ball past Lincoln, only to see his shot ripple the side netting.

Leatherhead’s third goal arrived in the 82nd minute, and once again Hogan was the architect. He collected the ball, chopped his defender inside out and smashed a fierce effort at Lincoln, who could only divert the ball into his own net.

Breckon was replaced by Flanighan as the Tanners looked to see the game out, but Bognor were handed a lifeline in the 90th minute when a late penalty was awarded and converted to make it 3–2.

Despite a nervy finish, Leatherhead held firm through the closing moments to secure all three points.

A strong second-half display, inspired by Hogan’s brace, proved decisive. Although a late and debatable penalty gave Bognor hope, the Tanners defended resolutely to earn a well-deserved victory.
