Getting to know……… Cam Black

Cam Black is in his third spell with the Tanners. His first two spells were on loan during the 2021/22 season from Dorking Wanderers. Despite playing in a struggling team Cam excelled and, despite his Dorking connections, was voted the Supporters Players of the Year. After spells with Hampton & Richmond, Bognor Regis Town, Hayes & Yeading, Cray Wanderers and Raynes Park Vale he returned to Fetcham Grove in February 2025.

Age? 22. Nationality? British

Can you provide a brief summary of your football career to date?

I really started my football career at Dorking Wanderers, where is spent 4 years at the club. During my time at Dorking, I had several loans at various step 3 clubs, one being Leatherhead when we were in the Isthmian Prem. After leaving Dorking two seasons ago, I joined Raynes Park Vale and then rejoined the Tanners during the back end of last season.

What was the main factor behind you re-joining Tanners in the summer and how are you enjoying life at the Grove?

I had many clubs get in contact with me once I left RPV, but when I heard the interest from Leatherhead, it was a no-brainer to come back. Leatherhead is my favourite club I’ve ever played for, I feel at home here, the fans have always welcomed me, and I wanted to get the club back promoted to step 3 when I last played for them. I’ve massively enjoyed playing at the Grove this season, the support from the fans has been unreal this year, with each match seeming to get bigger numbers. I feel like we have added some real quality to the team this year, and we are in a really good place in both the league and the FA Trophy.

Growing up, which players or sports people generally did you take inspiration from?

I’m a massive Chelsea fan, so growing up, John Terry was always the inspiration I looked up to. As a central defender myself, I always tried to replicate my game off him, as he is the best defender to play in the Prem in my opinion. Other childhood heroes were Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Ian Selley.

What other sports do you think you are good (or bad) at?

My main other sport I play is golf, which I have to mention I am the best player in the team (and you can ask Marky Waters how he got on against me…). I also like playing a bit of Padel when I get the time. In terms of what I’m bad at, I would say playing football in any position other than centre half.

You’re hosting a dinner party this weekend. Which three celebrities are invited, and why?

I would first invite Jose Mourinho, he is my favourite Chelsea manager of all time, and I think he would have some great stories. Next, I would invite Micky Flanigan to bring some banter, he is my favourite comedian going. To make up the third, I would throw in Eddie Hearn, I think he’s brilliant, and again would crack me up with some stories and jokes. Mixed group for a dinner party, but I think we would have a great time!

Do you have any pre match rituals or superstitions?

I’m not really superstitious. I think I always put my left boot on first, and then when we go out on the pitch a practice a few imaginary headers.

Do you have a nickname?

Everyone always just called me Cam, until this season, when all I’m known as in the changing room is Blackers. I don’t know who started it, but it’s stuck now, so I would say that’s my main nickname.

What is your Karaoke song of choice?

Lionel Richie – All Night Long

In your dreams, which team would you play for? Chelsea

What shows, podcasts or series are you currently watching or listening to?

I’m not a massive series guy, but I have a little guilty pleasure show I don’t mind is Made in Chelsea (don’t judge). Other than that it’s just watching Match of the Day on a Sunday morning.

What is the highlight of your football career to date?

A highlight of mine was getting man of the match in the Sussex Senior Cup Final for Bognor vs Worthing at the Amex. Playing in a premier league stadium in front of thousands of fans was a special moment.

What’s your favourite app on your phone?

Finally, do you have a message for the Leatherhead supporters?

Just a thank you for all your support so far this season. Turning up in the numbers, always cheering us on and clapping us off the pitch really does make a difference to all the boys and were are so thankful. Please keep it going for the remainder of the season and hopefully we will be able to lift the title for us all to celebrate together.
