Hayes & Yeading United 0 Leatherhead 1

Leatherhead advanced to the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy with a hard
fought 1-0 win against Hayes & Yeading United at the Skyex Community Stadium on
Saturday.

Deondre Date’s cool finish for the visitors’ midway through the second half was all
that separated the two sides in a match that rarely crackled into life.

Hayes & Yeading missed a chance to grab an early lead. Perri Iandolo latched onto a
through ball from Kaylen Hinds before forcing a smart save from Tanners goalkeeper
Sonny Wheeler.

Seb Karczewski had a half chance for Leatherhead on 31 minutes, latching onto Tom
Kavanagh’s corner but heading over from twelve yards out.

Iandolo came close again for United in first half stoppage time with a long range
effort that flew just over the top of the bar.

Tanners made some key changes at half-time with Matt Everitt and Deondre Date
replacing Marco Haigh and Trey Masikini in attack.

Everitt was soon in action, forcing a good low save from United’s keeper Juliusz
Pazio.

On 65 minutes Kavanagh went close for the visitors. The Tanners skipper made a
long run with the ball before drilling a fierce shot just over the top of the bar from the
edge of the box.

Leatherhead continued to press forward and achieved the vital breakthrough two
minutes later. Making a piercing break through the middle, Date latched onto Everitt’s
pass just outside United’s penalty area before firing a low shot beyond the keeper’s
reach from fifteen yards.

United fought back. On 74 minutes Wraynel Hercules beat Wheeler to the ball near
the corner of Leatherhead’s penalty area, but the striker’s wide-angled shot was
headed clear by defender George Hedley.

The hosts were largely restricted to long range efforts in the closing minutes, with
shots from Cole Brown and George Sippetts sailing high over the bar.

With three minutes remaining, United’s best chance to equalise came to nothing.
Hinds broke clear of his marker down the left. But with two of United’s players
advancing into good positions in Leatherhead’s penalty area, the Hayes & Yeading
striker over-hit his delivery and the opportunity was lost.

Tanners face a tough schedule of travel next week, with a flight to Guernsey for a
league match on Wednesday followed by a trip to Dartford for an eagerly anticipated
FA Cup tie on Saturday.
